FAQs
What types of retainers does Saracino Orthodontics offer?
Saracino Orthodontics offers three types of replacement retainers: (1) Clear Essix Retainers - thin, transparent trays that fit over your teeth, typically lasting 2 to 3 years; (2) Hawley Acrylic Retainers with Wire - removable acrylic retainers with a front wire, more durable and adjustable, lasting 5 to 10 years; and (3) Permanent/Fixed Retainers - a thin wire bonded to the back of your teeth for continuous retention without daily removal. All retainers are custom-made.
Can I get a replacement retainer at Saracino Orthodontics if I'm not a current patient?
Yes. Saracino Orthodontics provides replacement retainers to both current and non-current patients. You do not need to have been treated at our practice to order a replacement retainer. Simply contact our office at 314-649-8999 and our team will guide you through the process of getting your replacement retainer made. We offer all three styles: clear Essix, Hawley acrylic, and permanent/fixed retainers.
How much does a replacement retainer cost in St. Louis?
The cost of replacement retainers at Saracino Orthodontics varies depending on the type selected (Essix, Hawley, or fixed). Contact our office at 314-649-8999 for current pricing. Saracino Orthodontics also offers a retainer insurance program, which may cover replacement costs at a reduced rate if your retainer is lost, cracked, or broken within the coverage period. Ask our team for full details about the program when you call.
How long do retainers last before they need to be replaced?
The lifespan of a retainer depends on its type and how well it is maintained. Clear Essix retainers typically last 2 to 3 years with proper care. Hawley acrylic retainers with a wire frame can last 5 to 10 years and are adjustable. Permanent/fixed retainers can last many years if the wire bond remains intact but may need occasional repair if a bond breaks. Cleaning retainers daily and storing them in a protective case significantly extends their lifespan.
What is the retainer insurance program at Saracino Orthodontics?
The retainer insurance program at Saracino Orthodontics covers replacement retainers at a reduced cost if your retainer is lost, cracked, or broken within the coverage period. This program is designed to give patients peace of mind - retainers are easy to lose or damage, and replacement costs can add up without coverage. For current pricing, coverage terms, and how to enrol, contact our office at 314-649-8999.
What happens if I stop wearing my retainer after orthodontic treatment?
If you stop wearing your retainer, your teeth will gradually shift back toward their original positions, a process called orthodontic relapse. Studies show that some degree of shifting is common within months of stopping retainer use. The speed and extent of relapse varies by individual. Dr. Saracino recommends wearing retainers indefinitely, nightly wear long-term, to maintain your orthodontic results permanently.
What is the difference between a fixed retainer and a removable retainer?
A fixed (permanent) retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of your teeth, usually the lower front teeth, that cannot be removed. It provides continuous retention without relying on patient compliance. A removable retainer (Essix or Hawley) is worn at the patient's discretion, typically nightly. Fixed retainers eliminate the risk of forgetting to wear a retainer but require careful flossing around the wire. Removable retainers require consistent discipline but are easier to clean.
